Julia Fiona Roberts' parents are Walter Grady Roberts and Betty Lou Bredemus. Roberts is fourth in the Roberts generation to reside in Atlanta, beginning with her farmer great-grandfather John Pendleton Roberts. At an early age the father of her mother became obsessed with acting. He acted on the Emory University campus in 1952 and also in a variety of productions in Atlanta. He joined the Air Force in 1953 and, while working in Biloxi Mississippi was cast in an army production that featured Betty Lou Bredemus who was also in the Air force. The couple got married in 1955 and their first child Eric Anthony was born in 1956. Walter was studying at Tulane University, New Orleans Louisiana. In 1957, the couple quit the Air Force and Walter started his education at Tulane. In 1960, the family relocated into Decatur Georgia where Walter began working at Atlanta's Academy Theater and the Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio. In 1964 Walter along with Betty Lou began production on a local children's Saturday morning television show named Bum Bum and His Buddies that they funded on their own. In 1964 Walter and Betty Lou founded their own organization called the Actors and Writers Workshop. It lasted for 6 years. Lelisa Billingsley often referred to as Lisa was born in 1965. Julia Billingsley followed in 1967.
